Need African music for photo montage (Howard?) Can't Post
I've got a photo montage to do of the groom growing up, to be played at the reception. he's South African and I'm told hates popular western music.

Any suggestions?

Nothing main-stream pops to mind, so....

Digital Juice's royalty free library Back-Traxx offers an African Tribal Dance thats 4 min long. No lyrics, but good dance-type beat too.

Also, there's also a more mystical sounding Ancestral Voices to consider....

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is the cliched place to start. Male chorus harmonies with solid gentle rhythms.
Some themes are Christian, some not.
Have you asked the client?

I've spoken to the client (the groom's sister) and she didn't have any suggestions other than to tell me what he didn't like...

I can help you with something from a compilation of original artists, entitled "Made in Africa - Africa's Greatest Music Souvenir". It includes traditional African tunes, such as Tshotsholoza by the Johannesburg African Music Society (I also have a rendition of that by PJ Powers), Nkosi Sikelel' IAfrica, by Ladysmith Black Mambazo http://www.howardneill.com/... Sikelel'IAfrika.wma , etc. That is if the subject of the video is into traditional African music?

Possibly more appropriate would be Scatterlings of Africa by Johnny Clegg & Savuka http://www.howardneill.com/Scatterlings-Of-Africa.wma or Great Heart http://www.howardneill.com/Great-Heart.wma by the same group

Please let me know what you think. If the groom and his family are Afrikaans, we could look at something there.

Hi Howard,

5:30am and at the computer... wow! Peope think I'm crazy for starting at 6:30am but that's got me beat :)

They are indeed Afrikaans. The only other info I have about the groom is that he is a Bhuddist and very into spritual things.

I have a feeling that traditional music may do the trick.

The groom's sister is having the photo montage done as a surprise for him so all I have is her (very vague) idea of what he'd like.

Thanks for the help and suggestions... I have about six minutes of images to fill, and of course they're flying off to the wedding on Saturday... Unsure

Howard, was flipping through the TV channels and saw you! It was on the Animal Planet channel, and they featured a Chacma Baboon ranch, and at least one of them crazy bastids looked like your avatar. Tongue

I'm not sure where the ranch was, but the girl working there was a cute blonde (wow, you guys have some fine chickies down there). I haven't been that hot for a monkey wrangler since the woman from the San Diego Zoo that used to come on the Johnny Carson show. Laugh

Not so sure about that last one though... I know it's for the baby stuff but it had my ears trying to crawl back inside my head :).

Have you got something in the more tradition vein that'd fit the adult years?

I'm planning on using your first suggest (Ladysmith...) For the opening, then into Scatterlings (for the tempo) as we get to the teenage & party years. All I need then someting to round it off as we hit the adult 'zen' years.

...or maybe I should be ending with the Ladysmith song and starting with something lighter?..

I really do appreciate the help. If you're ever in Australia I owe you large quantities of your beverage of choice :)

Yes, there are some good looking ladies here but feminine beauty is all around. Way back in 1956, "Yellow Rose of Texas" was topping our local charts:-

Smile You are right - we are way OT. Tomorrow, we are taking one week's leave. We are going about 300 miles up the coast to the Knysna Oyster Festival. There will be me, Sam, Daughter, Son in Law and two grandchildren. As we say here, "Lekker!"

BTW, for any prowlers on this forum, we have a house sitter, who is into marshal arts. He also keeps poisonous snakes and is an excellent shottist. He will be looking after our trained attack dogs whilst we are gone. His favourite expression is, "Go ahead and make my day.".

I am taking an editing computer in the boot (trunk). I wake up early, so why waste the time? The bride for the current project is also going. We learnt this last night, when we phoned her about music for the video, so we will meet up and she will give us CDs of the music which she wants on her video. Small world! No doubt, we will also put away many Windhoeks, Hansas, Castles and, the local speciality, Forresters draught. We will even have some oysters. Ja, Lekker!

I will scratch around and get back to you. I have been thinking - Nkosi Sikelel' IAfrica is the start of the South African national anthem. It was written many years ago by a Christian Minister of Religion. It means "God Bless Africa .." I wondered if that "God" would be considered by offensive to a Buddhist. I phoned a local Buddhist society and they confirm that it would not be appropriate. they pointed out that there is some wonderful Buddist music which is available on CD and in music stores. Apparently it more of a chanting variety.

We must be careful. Don't forget that, in South Africa, the groom would have grown up in a segregated nation. If he grew up in a city, he might not have been exposed to African music. If he grew up on a farm, that is a different story.

You looking for something traditional, with a bit of zest - Tshotsholoza is a work song, which is sung in unison by workers on the job. It was the theme tune for the SA Springbok rugby team at the World cup in 1995. Here are two versions. The female singer is a white woman, PJ Powers, who is accepted and lionised by Africans throughout Southern and Central Africa.

Here is the title track from the well known show Ipi Ntombi - appropriately it means "Where's my girl". There is also Mama Themba's Wedding, from the same show, but I don't have it. Frown

If you go to the 11.8 MB download, you will hear a variety of African music. I would especially recommend that you listen to My African Dream, at 2.23 - that could suit the "Zen" phase. However, if the groom is a town boy from a conservative Afrikaans family, we could be "barking up the wrong tree" altogether. Smile BTW African Dream, Tshotsholoza, Scatterlings of Africa, Great Heart, Ipi Ntombi and Mama Themba's Wedding all made it big on the "White Charts".

For the record, I went with Tshotsholoza and Scatterlings in the end - probably because they are both "safer ground" to my Australian musical tastes.

Talking of cute blondes, look no further than your own back yard. I was checking out the entertainments supplement of last night's Cape Argus and there is an article on Miranda Lambert. I don't think that I have heard her sing but they say that she does old fashioned country. That makes her my kind of girl - in a paternalistic kind of way. Smile
