Re: How to stop VCR from recording timecode from deck?

: I am transferring FCP (version 1.2.5) footage from a Sony DVCAM DSR-20 deck to a Sony SLV-N71 VCR and the timecode is recording onto the VHS tape as well. Has never happened before. How do I turn off the timecode or keep it from being recorded? Exactly what do you mean by the "timecode being recorded to VHS"? There are two ways in which timecode can be written (in a form readable by other equipment) to VHS tape: Vertical Interval Timecode (VITC), in which the TC signal is written to the lowest video scan lines, which are normally hidden by the bezel of the TV set; and Linear Timecode (LTC), in which the timecode is written as an audio signal to one of the linear audio tracks. However, no consumer VHS deck, including the SLV-N71, is capable of either one of these. Therefore, I would guess that what you mean is that the timecode (or, more likely, the hours, minutes, and seconds display) is appearing on the screen. This could be due to the DSR-20 displaying the timecode on screen, and the playback deck recording it (most likely possibility). Consult your manual for how to turn off the display. The second possibility is that the SLV-N71 is recording its own hours/minutes/seconds display. Again, consult the deck's user manual to turn this off. A third possibility is that you recorded a "window burn" from FCP onto the DVCAM master. Check this by seeing if the display is present on the master tape when you play it in a different DV or DVCAM device. If that's what happened, you'll need to record another master tape from FCP.
