Flash is Dying. Hail HTML 5.

Adobe announced the beginning of the end of Flash on mobile. Apple won’t support it on the iPhone. And Microsoft is leaving it as well. HTML 5 is replacing Flash. One of the advantages is that HTML 5 can handle just about anything that Flash can.

HTML is non-proprietary and open source. Other open source software continues to grow in popularity. The following are open source software: Apache, Firefox, HTML, Linux, MySQL, Open Office, PHP, Perl, and WordPress. Most of the Internet runs on these free, constantly evolving, open source applications.

HTML 5 can include application programming interfaces (API)s. This enables it to do complex Internet applications like accessing cloud-based services from mobile devices. HTML 5 is the new standard for major mobile devices. Developers no longer need to build for all operating systems. As Adobe kills off Flash for mobile devices, HTML 5 is filling the gap.

This won’t happen overnight. Flash will still be around for years. So Flash developers will be needed to maintain existing Flash-based websites. But new development will be done in HTML 5. So this is a good time to start learning HTML5 and if you have a Flash website, consider transitioning it to HTML5. This could give your site important, new capabilities.

The previous version HTML 4.01, came in 1999. Things have changed a lot since then and the changes keep coming. While HTML 5 is still a work in progress, the major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, and Safari support many of the new HTML 5 elements and APIs.
