Let’s change that starting today! You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. First, brainstorm some short video ideas that would promote your business. You can and should do more than one so start a file of ideas.

One type of promotional video that always helps is a testimonial from one of your satisfied customers. Or you could give away free information, lessons and mini courses. Of course you could also do a comedy or spoof video that promotes your business to the right viewers.

Make it look and sound better than a typical YouTube video. Pay close attention to the lighting. Three or four point lighting is best, but available light can look very good if you choose it carefully. But please no fluorescents. This has to look good. Also choose a good looking background. Use a lavaliere mic so your video sounds a 100 times better than most.

Edit the video and choose only the best section or sections. Use a lower third to identify the person speaking then superimpose your web address or other contact information.

Go to the YouTube “Signup” page at http://www.youtube.com/signup?next=/ choose a username and password, and enter your information. Then click the “Sign Up” button and you’re done. When you upload a video, choose “high quality” rather than the default low quality. It’s in the account settings under video playback quality.

To use YouTube for promoting your business, you’ll also want to create a channel. Design your channel so it looks professional just like designing your web site, but easier. Here’s an example http://www.youtube.com/user/valsartdiary

YouTube has some powerful networking tools you’ll want to use such as sending messages to other users, commenting on videos you like, share channels, and more. Then let everyone else know about your YouTube videos. You may also want to host the videos yourself or on sites like vimeo.com to achieve better quality, either way the first step is to produce videos. What are you waiting for? Go get ’em!
