What you can do using ONLY Stock Footage? There have been many TV shows, mostly docs, some about World War II that were created entirely with stock footage. The following is a commercial. You may want to watch it first without sound.
It may seem simple enough to produce, but take a look at the credits in the “About” section. There’s a lot of work in this piece. It’s really an ad for Getty Images. And the footage is not cheap. If you were paying Getty for those images, you’d be paying thousands. When I was shooting for the networks, we did a few interviews for new ABC show. While there was some new footage, most of the show was stock footage. I was surprised to learn from the producer that this show would cost a lot more than the average 20/20 show – because of the stock footage.Because today there are so many stock footage houses and deals, you can produce a stock footage commercial for less than was possible in the past. It’s still expensive though, so budget carefully if you are contemplating producing a video from stock footage.
Here’s another example, this one is called “The Extraordinary Healing Power of Mom.”
This was done mostly with stock photos with some stock footage. Its goal is to help stamp out a disease.And finally one more.

That Getty video was incredible! I haven’t really created any “stock only” videos but it definitely sparks some ideas. Such as when working with a non-profit and they want to have some footage from another country… It’s probably a lot cheaper to license some clips than flying there and shooting it yourself. Though, if you are going to use a lot of clips then over time it might make sense to just go and do the shoot to build up a library of clips.
I’ve looked into places like VideoBlocks (annual subscription for stock photo/video/audio) but have found those places limited on good HD quality pieces. They definitely have some good pieces but also definitely holes for more.
That last music video with the singer “photo bombing” all those shots was so funny! Those clips had to cost a fortune though to license!
