Canon Rebel With 4K Video
Canon has a new EOS (Electro-Optical System) Rebel DSLR camera that shoots 4K video and weighs less than a pound with battery and SD card. The SL3 camera (also known as the EOS 250D) is comfortable to hold with a good build quality and has a 24.1-megapixel APS-C image sensor. It has a fully articulating rear LCD touchscreen that is 3 inches featuring Live View shooting. For stills, there is a pop-up flash. The ISO ranges from 100 to 25,600 and can be expanded to 51,200.

Kit Lens

The kit lens is an EF-S 18-55mm f/4-5.6 IS STM zoom lens. Not that bad for a kit lens. It is fairly sharp and has image stabilization to keep your images sharp at slower shutter speeds. But the slow F4-5.6 maximum aperture limits low-light shooting to say the least. You might want to opt for a fixed lens like the EF-S 24mm F2.8 pancake lens which is $129 from Amazon. This is a very small, quite sharp, cheap and well-built lens.

What is special is that this is the first EOS Rebel camera with 4K video at 24 fps. At this resolution there is a 1.7x crop factor. It will record full HD 1080p video at up to 60 fps without any frame cropping. There is also an HDR option that records at 30 fps. You can even do a 4K time-lapse video with intervals of from 1 second to 60 minutes. You can record a maximum of 3,600 shots. The camera offers digital stabilization for shooting video.

But the SL3 is not the best camera among its peers for video. A modern phone can probably do a better job. But if you need stills and some video and an easy to hold and use decent camera, this could be for you.

The SL3 has Wi-Fi with Bluetooth for image transfer, to easily share images on social media and for remote camera control.

The camera has an accurate and easy-to-use Dual Pixel autofocus. It also has a very helpful “guide mode” for beginners.

Viewfinder and Autofocus

The optical viewfinder uses very little battery power, but it is small and a bit dim which may require getting used to. The optical viewfinder is a separate autofocus system as opposed to the live view on the rear screen. The optical viewfinder has only nine autofocus dots that either you or the camera choose to use to set focus over your subject. The optical autofocus system finds focus very quickly and accurately. The Dual Pixel autofocus in live view is quite good.

This is the first DSLR in the Canon EOS Rebel line with Dual Pixel AF with Eye Detection through Live View. Eye Detection AF in Live View will work in Servo mode for both stills and video. Live View has 3,975 selectable autofocus points and a focus acquisition speed of 0.03 seconds and the option to use Spot area autofocus in both AF-S One-Shot and AF-C AI Servo.

Batteries

The SL3 uses Canon LP-E17 batteries which give the camera an impressive 1,070 shot battery life (CIPA rating) using optical viewfinder or 320 shot battery life in live view.
This is the most compact DSLR model Canon offers. The Canon Rebel SL3 with 18-55mm Lens Black $649.00 is available from Amazon or for $575 with body only.
