Barbie dolls have often been criticized as a poor role model for young girls. There were comments about Barbie’s unrealistic body standards and a Computer Engineer Barbie who required the help of her male counterparts to get rid of a virus. And there were many other accusations made against Mattel who produced the Barbie doll. Just ask a woman.
This video, on the other hand, should make any young girl feel good and empowered. It’s very entertaining and you don’t have to be a young girl to enjoy it. It reminded me of the Little Rascals , the 1994 American comedy film which was an adaptation of a much older TV series. The marketing technique used is a simple one ——giving young kids adult careers. Not only is it cute and appealing, but it does what previous Mattel Barbie pitches did not ——give a young girl the vision that she can become anything she chooses to be. Good for you Mattel. You got it right this time. This marketing video for young girls shows that Mattel does not always demean girls.
Could you use this same technique in business videos? Many promotional videos have portrayed kids as adults. And the intended audience does not have to be young girls as in the video above.
