The new DJI Phantom 4 claims to have a crash avoidance system. And for $1400 you would think it should. Well, some crazy guys over at TechSmartt needed to test that claim. Can they crash this drone? Fortunately they made a video to document their attempts.
And besides their attempts to crash this drone, the new quadcopter has some other features:
- Auto takeoff and auto return home with GPS
- Capture 4K ultra HD video at 30 fps
- Gimbal stabilization technology
- Visual sensor for Obstacle Avoidance
- Streamlined shell and magnesium unibody
- Top speed of 44.7 mph in Sport Mode (Obstacle avoidance off in this mode.)
- Maximum control range of 3.1 miles
- Visual tracking of moving subject
- Up to 28 minutes flying time
Simple To Fly
There is a live feed from the drone’s main camera to the screen of your mobile device. Just tap anywhere on that monitor and the aircraft will fly in that direction. It automatically eases into turns, avoiding that jerky motion a new pilot gets when flying manually.
It can also identify and follow a person while keeping the subject perfectly in frame.
Fly at Three Speeds
With object avoidance turned on, the maximum speed is about 22 miles per hour. Normal flight mode allows it to fly about 35 miles an hour. The new sport mode allows it to fly at an amazing 45 miles per hour. This is only for very experienced pilots. Professionals will appreciate the remarkable high speed races or stunts.
Tripod in the Sky
DJI claims their Phantom 4 is five times more stable than its predecessors. Hovering, even in moderate winds provides a very stable shot almost like having a tripod in the air.
Fly Responsibly
The Federal Aviation Administration requires registration of many drones flown in the US, for hobby or commercial purposes. Registration is easy and costs only $5/year. Register here.
Commercial Uses
To operate an unmanned aircraft or drone for any business use, there are more stringent requirements than for hobby flying. Learn about the laws for commercial drone use.
